Terry Champlin a classical guitarist well known to area audiences and also acclaimed for his compositions, will be joined by Eugene Friesen on the cello and Helen Avakian, also on classical guitar, in concert at Chapel of Our Lady Restoration, August 10 at 4:00. They will play original music by Terry Champlin.
Mr. Champlin, who teaches guitar at Mannes College of Music, New York City, and at Vassar, has performed all over the world as well as at Avery Fisher and Carnegie Recital Hall. He has been featured on WNYC radio and on public television’s Ars Nova Series and records on the Viennese Modern Masters label. Educated as a theoretical physicist at MIT, he soon switched to music and has since written more than 100 compositions ranging from solo classical-guitar pieces to orchestral works. His last appearance at the chapel, with Ms. Avakian, was in 2006.
Eugene Friesen is known internationally as a concert artist, composer, conductor and teacher. He has been soloist at the International Cello Festival in Manchester, England, Rencontres d'Ensembles de Violoncelles in Beauvais, France, the World Cello Congress in Baltimore, Maryland, and the Rio International Cello Encounter in Rio de Janeiro. Winner of two Grammy Awards for his contribution to Paul Winter Consort CDs, he has recorded five of his own, including most recently, the acclaimed Sono Miho. He has also recorded with such diverse artists as Dave Brubeck, Toots Thielemans, Betty Buckley, Will Ackerman, Joe Lovano and Dream Theater.
With CelloMan, a popular program he created for young audiences, Friesen has taught new techniques and improvisation throughout the world. A graduate of Yale School of Music, where he studied with Brazilian cellist Aldo Parisot, he is an artist-in-residence at New York’s Cathedral of St. John the Divine and is on the faculty of Berklee College of Music, Boston.
Ms. Avakian is also an award-winning singer and songwriter who has been voted favorite acoustic act four times by Rhythm and News magazine. She performs on her own and with orchestras, dance and theatre companies, and with folk and rock bands. She too has appeared at Avery Fisher and on PBS television and is currently accompanist for the Bard College flamenco dance program and guitar instructor at Dutchess Community College. She earned a master’s in classical guitar performance at Hunter College after study at Mannes College of Music.
The chapel is located at 45 Market Street, Cold Spring, New York, and free parking is available on weekends at the adjacent Metro North Train Station. The music series is made possible, in part, with public funds from New York State Council on the Arts Decentralization Program, administered in Putnam County by Putnam Arts Council. Individual contributions are welcome.
